If you’ve been told you need a TOEFL score, the first questions are usually practical ones. How much does it cost in ringgit? Where can I sit it in KL? How do I book on the ETS website without making a mistake?
This guide answers all three for first-time candidates in Malaysia. It also covers the 2026 changes to the test, because the TOEFL iBT Malaysia you’ll sit today isn’t the one your older cousin took.
One thing worth saying upfront: the TOEFL costs around RM850 every time you sit it. The cheapest TOEFL is the one where you reach your target score on the first attempt. Further down, we explain how ACE Education helps you get there before you book.
TOEFL iBT Exam Fee in Malaysia
The TOEFL iBT Malaysia costs US$199 in Malaysia, which works out to roughly RM850 before tax. The same fee applies whether you sit the test at a centre or take the Home Edition.
ETS sets the fee in US dollars. What you actually pay in ringgit depends on the exchange rate on the day and your bank’s conversion charges. Budget a little above RM850 to be safe.
The registration fee includes sending your scores to up to four universities or organizations, as long as you choose them before test day. Everything else costs extra:
| Service | Fee (USD) | When it Applies |
|---|---|---|
| Express registration | 49 | Booking within 7 days of your test date |
| Rescheduling | 69 | Moving your test to another date |
| Additional score reports | 29 each | Each extra university or agency beyond your free four |
| Score reinstatement | 20 | Restoring scores you cancelled |
| Speaking or Writing score review | 80 | Asking ETS to re-check one section |
| Speaking and Writing score review | 160 | Re-checking both sections |
| Express scoring | 129 | Getting results faster |
If you cancel at least four full days before your test, you get 50% of the registration fee back. Cancel later than that and you get nothing.
Here’s the part people miss. A retake costs the full US$199 again. Add a reschedule and a few extra score reports, and one unplanned second attempt can push your total past RM1,500.

Authorised TOEFL iBT Test Centres in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor & Across Malaysia + Available Test Dates
You can sit the TOEFL iBT Malaysia at authorized centres in Malaysia’s main cities, or from home with a live online proctor. There’s no fixed national calendar. Each centre publishes its own dates, and many run sessions several times a month.
| Area | Where Tests are Held | Good to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur | Authorised venues, including ELS Language Centre | Most dates and seats in the country |
| Petaling Jaya & Subang Jaya | Authorised partner centres | Convenient for Selangor students, and close to our USJ branch |
| Johor Bahru | Regional partner centres | Fewer sessions, so book early |
| Kota Kinabalu | Regional partner centres | The main option for students in Sabah |
Centres and seat availability change often, so always check the live list on your ETS account before you plan around a date.
TOEFL iBT Home Edition
The Home Edition is the same test, with the same content and scores, taken on your own computer at home. A human proctor watches you online throughout. It’s popular in Malaysia because dates open up almost every day.
Before choosing it, make sure you have:
- A Windows or Mac computer (tablets and phones aren’t allowed)
- A working webcam, microphone and speakers
- A quiet, private room with a clear desk
- A stable internet connection
If any of these are uncertain, a test centre is the safer choice. A technical failure on the day can mean a lost test.
What changed in 2026
ETS updated the TOEFL iBT in January 2026. Reading and Listening are now adaptive, so the second part of each section gets harder or easier depending on how you did in the first. The test is also shorter.
Scores now appear on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, linked to the CEFR. Until January 2028, your report also shows a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale, so universities can read it either way.
How to Register for the TOEFL iBT via Your Official ETS Account
Booking takes about 15 minutes if you have your passport and card ready. Follow this order:
- Create your ETS account. Go to the official ETS TOEFL iBT registration page and sign up. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport, letter for letter. This is the step people rush, and it’s the one that gets candidates turned away on test day.
- Select Malaysia and your test format. Choose Malaysia as your testing country, then pick a test centre or the Home Edition.
- Choose a date and time. Pick a slot that leaves enough time for your scores to reach universities before their deadlines.
- Pick your four free score recipients. Add the universities or agencies you’re applying to now. Adding them later costs US$29 each.
- Pay online. ETS accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal and a few other methods through your account.
- Save your confirmation. Check the email for your date, reporting time and centre address, and keep it handy.
ID rules
You’ll need a valid, original ID that matches your registration exactly, including your name, date of birth and photo. For most candidates in Malaysia, a valid passport is the safest choice. Check the ETS ID requirements for Malaysia before test day, because an expired document or a name mismatch means you can’t sit the test and won’t get a refund.
Booking tip: Popular KL centres fill up during university application season. If you need scores for a specific deadline, book at least four to six weeks ahead. That avoids the US$49 express fee and gives you a backup date if something goes wrong.
Cost of Retaking the TOEFL (US$199 Each Time) vs. Getting Your Target Score on Attempt #1 with Guided Prep
The most expensive TOEFL plan is booking a test “to see how it goes”. We hear it every month, usually from students who missed their target by a few points and are now paying for a second seat, a reschedule and new score reports.
Here’s how the two routes usually compare:
| Book First, Prepare Later | Diagnostic and Guided Prep First | |
|---|---|---|
| First attempt | Taken without knowing your weak sections | Booked once mock scores are near your target |
| Likely result | Speaking or Writing falls short, so a retake is needed | Target reached, or missed by a small, known margin |
| Test fees | US$199 × 2 or more, plus reschedule and report fees | US$199 for one planned sitting |
| Time lost | 4 to 8 weeks waiting for a new date and scores | None. You apply on schedule. |
| Stress | High, especially close to university deadlines | Lower, because you know what to expect |
Prep isn’t free either, so here’s the honest version. Guided preparation makes most sense when your target is demanding (many universities ask for around 80 on the old scale, or 4.5 on the new one), when your deadline is fixed, or when Speaking and Writing are your weaker skills. Those two sections are the hardest to improve alone, because you can’t mark your own spoken answers or essays accurately.
If you’re already comfortably above your target in practice tests, you may only need a few sessions to get used to the new format. If you’re not sure where you stand, that’s exactly what a diagnostic test is for.
Prepare Confidently with ACE Education’s TOEFL Training Centre in Malaysia
ACE Education has been helping students in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor prepare for international English tests for years. Our TOEFL preparation programme is built around one idea: work on the specific skills holding back your score, not on a generic textbook from cover to cover.
Here’s what you get:
- Tutors who know the 2026 format. Adaptive Reading and Listening, the new task types and the 1–6 score scale are all covered.
- Real feedback on Speaking and Writing. Your tutor listens to your recorded answers and marks your essays against ETS scoring criteria, then shows you exactly what to change.
- Timed mock tests. Full practice tests in a computer-based format, so the timing and interface feel familiar on test day.
- A plan built around you. Whether you’re applying for a degree in the US, a postgraduate place in Canada, or a work or visa requirement, your lessons match your target and deadline.
- Progress reports. Regular updates for you, and for parents if you’re a school leaver.
We also prepare students for the Home Edition, including how to set up your room and computer so there are no surprises when the proctor connects.
ACE Education is a private tutoring provider, not a TOEFL test centre. You’ll book and pay for the official test through ETS. We make sure you walk in ready.
Take a Scored TOEFL Diagnostic Test Before You Book Your Official ETS Exam Date
Before you spend around RM850 on the real test, spend an afternoon finding out where you stand. Every TOEFL student at ACE starts with a scored diagnostic.
It’s a timed practice test covering all four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. You can take it at our Mont Kiara or Subang Jaya centre, or online. A tutor then marks your Speaking and Writing by hand. That’s the part online practice tools can’t do well.
In your results session, you’ll find out:
- Your estimated score on both the 1–6 scale and the 0–120 scale
- Which section is pulling your overall score down
- Whether the problem is language, test technique or timing
- How far you are from your university’s requirement
- How many weeks of preparation you realistically need, and which test date to book
Some students discover they’re closer than they thought and can book within a few weeks. Others find a weak section that would have cost them a retake. Either way, you choose your ETS date with real information.
